2001 Tandem Halleck Vineyard Estate
2001: Our First Vineyard Designated Wine
Our first two harvests, 1999 and 2000, of vineyard fruit were purchased by winemaker, Fred Scherrer. Fred was reluctant to make a vineyard designated wine from Halleck Vineyard. He was not convinced o f the quality of the vineyard.
In 2001, we met Greg Lafollette, famed winemaker from Flowers Winery, at a school function. His children were schoolmates of our sons. We gave Greg a bottle of our 1999 Halleck Vineyard estate wine made by Fred. He called us the next morning to secure the fruit for his inaugural vintage of Tandem wines and offered to make a vineyard designated wine.
The rest is history: we won the 2002 Pinot Noir Summit, recognizing us as the #1 Pinot Noir in the US. We hired Greg to be our winemaker. He continues as a friend and valued mentor.
Tasting Notes November 2016 (as written by participants to the 2016 Harvest Party)
Color: Plum with slight ambering at edges, still clear and bright
Nose: A bit of coconut, strawberry and mineral tones
Mouthfeel: Luscious, textural
Flavor: What an aged Pinot should taste like! Rich, tobacco, earthy, still good fruit of dark cherries, but giving way to forest floor and mushroom notes. Stunning!
